After more than 30 years as a broadcast journalist I’ve learned to look for the most valuable stories in the unlikliest of places: the cobbler huddled over a bench in his isolated shop on a small town Georgia back street, the mother of an irrepressible daughter with Downs who refused to believe that her daughter was consigned to a life of mediocrity and started an international company to help her child and others like her, the spunky wife of a rural county supervisor who’s fighting to eliminate the economic inequities in her community. What is it that inspires a seven year old boy, witness to the butchering of his parents, friends and neighbors by government soldiers, was kidnapped and sold into slavery, suffered starvation, taunts and physical abuse for two years before escaping to freedom in America and now taking advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that means?
These are only a handful of the stories that we all need to celebrate. There are as many stories as there are people who inhabit this country and our planet. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy reporting them. Please let me know what you think!
